“It took seventeen years to get 3,000 hits in baseball, I did it in one day on the golf course.” Hank Aaron
“Golf… no way I’ll play that stupid game, that’s for old retired guys that can’t play a real sport like FOOTBALL”! That’s what I said when I was a kid. Another kid had mentioned to me that one of my teammates from my school football team was starting to play golf. We all said, “Oh man, what a wimp”. Of course he is now listed as a career money winner on the PGA tour. It’s also the same attitude I had towards Christians. Little did I know that at the ripe age of 36 I would get the proverbial “Golf bug” and totally be consumed by it! It is as contagious as the flu. Once you are bitten by it, it's hard to get away from. I literally went to the driving range on a daily basis for about four years. If I hit balls lousy, I would be in a bad mood. If I hit them well, life was great. I not only became a golf “junkie”, I more importantly, became a student of the game. I really studied the golf swing and its intricacies. But what happened next changed my life. Not only for my family and for others I would come in contact with, but for me. I had a new found relationship with Jesus, I had a new eternal address. I made a decision to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. The word disciple is a derivative from the Greek and it literally means to be a continual learner. It's been said, “Golf is a game that can’t be mastered only played”. As is life!
How does a person develop a passion for a game that has been around for over 400 years? With instruments that are better suited for gardening? (I mean, that is what I did with my Dad’s clubs when I was a kid) There is something in us that fuels us to conquer and master. We see those people who seem to go through life with zeal and confidence. We look at them and wonder what or who made them that way. God has designed us to be passionate about something. What are you passionate about? It is obvious that God is passionate about us. I don’t think He would have humbled Himself as He did to become part of the human race He created. Then die the death He did unless He was not passionate about His creation.
It is probably odd to think that a study about the God of the universe can be used in the same context as golf. I think it's awesome! Look at the word golf and how it can be used. If you break it down the word golf can look like this, God Our Loving Father. Through this lesson we will not only get some tips on the golf swing, but we will parallel it with life and back it up with scripture. To “morph” into the disciples Jesus calls us to be. Life can be very tuff! So can the game of golf. So let’s “Tee it up” and begin our journey together!
